Forest of Bowland Hornby Road — Quernmore to Slaidburn via Salter Fell Track
Salter Fell: Lancashire's forgotten high road.
The Hornby Road is old — centuries of packhorses, drove cattle, and salt traders have worn this line across the Bowland Fells into the landscape. Running from Quernmore south of Lancaster across Salter Fell to Slaidburn in the Hodder Valley, the track climbs to around 1,400 feet on open fell that offers no shelter and no mercy in foul weather. The surface swings between solid limestone-based grit track and deep peat ruts depending on season and recent rainfall. The crossing of Salter Fell itself is the crux — exposed moorland with sheep tracks braiding off in every direction, meaning navigation matters. A GPS waypoint at the summit cairn on White Moor keeps you honest when cloud drops to the deck, which happens with zero warning in Bowland.
This is a high-clearance route with moderate technical demands — a capable stock 4WD manages it in dry conditions, but wet moorland peat transforms the ruts into a genuine test requiring low range and careful line choice. The Forest of Bowland is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Special Protection Area for birds, so you’re expected to stay on the defined track. No permits, but seasonal restrictions may apply during nesting — check with Lancashire County Council before spring visits. Fuel in Lancaster or Clitheroe. No cell service on the high fell. What you get: a legitimate taste of northern English wilderness that most people don’t know exists.
