Derryclare to Inagh Valley — Connemara Mountain Track via Maumturk Upland
Bog, granite, and Atlantic silence.
Connemara doesn’t give itself up easy. The track running south from Derryclare Lough into the Inagh Valley and up along the Maumturk flank is the kind of route that punishes soft tyres and soft drivers equally. You’re running across blanket bog underlaid by quartzite — ground that looks firm and isn’t. The track climbs above Lough Inagh to a ridge with unobstructed sight lines to the Twelve Bens massif to the west, a view that stops you cold no matter how many times you’ve seen it. Water crossings over unnamed bog drains are inevitable and their depth changes daily with Atlantic rainfall. The descent back toward the valley floor via Recess picks up the R344 near Lough Derryclare, but the off-road section between those points is where the route earns its keep.
This is technical 4×4 country — deep bog ruts, loose quartzite slabs, and soft shoulders that will swallow a wheel without warning. High-clearance 4WD with low-range is non-negotiable. All-terrain tyres minimum; mud-terrain preferred. A recovery kit and traction boards are worth carrying — there’s no mobile signal above the valley floor and help is a long walk away. Best season is June through August; spring and autumn are passable but wetter. No permits required under Irish land access norms, but respect private grazing land. What you get is Connemara at its most elemental — stone, water, cloud, and silence.
