Peatlands Way Forestry Track — Atherny to Mountbellew via Connaught Boglands
Joyce Country bog tracks above Killary.
Joyce Country sits in the northwest corner of County Galway, wedged between Connemara’s quartzite peaks and the dramatic fjord of Killary Harbour, and the network of old Green Roads and bog tracks that lace through it are as wild as anything on the island. The route from the Maam Valley floor up through the Maumturk foothills and down to the Leenane road follows a combination of unclassified county roads and bog tracks used historically by turf cutters and cattle drovers. The landscape is raw — blanket bog as far as you can see, mountain streams crossing the track every half mile, and the kind of Atlantic grey that turns everything silver and brown. The descent toward Killary Harbour is the payoff: the longest fjord in Ireland opening below you with the Partry Mountains on the far shore.
This is soft-ground bog country and the tracks are unforgiving after any significant rain — which is most of the time in Connaught. A proper 4WD with low-range is essential; a recovery kit, hi-lift jack, and traction boards are not optional extras here. The tracks are unclassified public roads in some sections and private bog access in others — local knowledge matters. Fuel in Maam or Leenane before you go. No permit required, no fees. Best attempted in a dry window between June and August but even then, expect at least one axle-deep crossing. The reward is complete isolation in one of Ireland’s most dramatic mountain landscapes.
