Conor Pass to Brandon Creek Backdoor — Dingle’s Hidden Northern Descents

Ireland's highest sea cliffs, reached by a road with no room for error.

Difficult

Most people walk to the top of Slieve League. A handful drive. The track from Teelin village climbs the shoulder of the mountain toward One Man’s Pass on a single-track road that runs out of ideas and tarmac at roughly the same time, leaving you parked on a ledge with the whole of Donegal Bay spread below and a vertical drop on three sides. The surface starts as patched tarmac out of Teelin, transitions to rough stone and compacted dirt as you climb, and deteriorates to loose gravel and embedded rock near the top. The road is genuinely narrow — two vehicles cannot pass in most sections, and reversing on the edge is not a drill. From the high point you’re looking at the tallest sea cliffs in Ireland, with the Atlantic crashing 601 metres below.

This is passable in a competent high-clearance 2WD in summer but a 4WD gives you options when the wet grass and saturated ground pull you toward the edge. Fog comes in hard and fast here — the Atlantic doesn’t care about your schedule. No permits, no fees. Killybegs has fuel; Carrick has a small shop. June through August is your window before autumn storms make the exposed sections actively dangerous. Wild camping is tolerated on the mountain shoulder but expect wind that’ll rattle every panel on your rig. The payoff is one of the most savage Atlantic cliff views accessible by vehicle anywhere in Europe.
