Swamp Fox Passage to Witherbee — Francis Marion National Forest Pineland Run
Blackwater swamps where a ghost army once hid.
The Francis Marion National Forest north of Charleston is not what most people picture when they think overlanding — no mountains, no slickrock, no drama in the skyline. What you get instead is a dense web of forest roads cutting through longleaf pine savanna, cypress swamp, and blackwater creek drainages that can swallow a rig up to its axles after a hard rain. The Swamp Fox Trail corridor traces ground where Revolutionary War General Francis Marion ran circles around British regulars, and his knowledge of these waterlogged pine flats kept him uncatchable. The route from the Swamp Fox Passage trailhead near Witherbee runs through Road 125 and FR 211 connector spurs, crossing Halfway Creek and threading past Carolina bays — elliptical wetlands found almost nowhere else on earth.
This is deceptively technical terrain. What looks like a firm sandy road in dry season turns to axle-deep mud after coastal storms, which come through frequently from June through November. High-clearance is mandatory; lockers help when the track gets soft. Keep a recovery kit and a friend with a strap — cell service is nearly nonexistent once you’re deep in the forest. Water crossings are shallow but slippery. Best season is November through April when the ground is firmer and the bugs are down. No permits needed; camping is dispersed along forest roads with a fire pan.
