Kellys Stump Road to Flattop Mountain — Wrangell-St. Elias Backcountry Drive

42 miles into the biggest park in America.

Difficult

The Nabesna Road punches 42 miles into Wrangell-St. Elias National Park from Slana, threading through boreal spruce flats, tundra benches, and creek crossings that will humble overland rigs that weren’t properly built. Mile 29 at Sportsman’s Lodge marks the last reliable stopping point before the road degrades into rutted volcanic gravel and muddy creek fords — most notably the Copper Creek crossing, which can flood out in June and early July without warning. The surrounding peaks of the Wrangell Mountains loom over 16,000 feet and the volcanic cone of Mount Sanford dominates the northern skyline on clear days. This is a road where the moose outnumber the humans and the grizzlies know it.

Minimum entry requirement is a true high-clearance 4WD with all-terrain tires, a full-size spare, and enough fuel for the round trip — there is no gas past Slana. Cell service drops to zero by mile five and stays there. The NPS recommends checking road conditions at the Slana Ranger Station before committing. Best window is mid-July through early September. No permit required, dispersed camping allowed at designated pull-outs. What you get is 42 miles of genuine wilderness driving with the continental United States’ biggest mountains watching every mile.
