Chemin du Lac Doré — Réserve faunique La Vérendrye Interior Forestry Loop

Shield granite, boreal black, zero cell service.

Difficult

La Vérendrye is a proper wilderness reserve — 13,000 square kilometres of Precambrian Shield with more lakes than most countries have rivers. The Chemin du Lac Doré branches off Highway 117 north of Val-d’Or and works its way through the reserve’s interior, crossing the Dozois Reservoir watershed and skirting the eastern shore of Lac Doré before pushing north toward the Outaouais headwaters. Expect soft shoulders, undulating Shield terrain, seasonal mud wallows that swallow bumpers in May, and a mid-route river ford near the Rivière des Outaouais tributary that requires genuine water-crossing judgment. Logging trucks own this road during weekdays — pull over and let them pass.

This is a moderate to difficult run depending on season and recent precipitation. A lifted truck with all-terrain tires and a recovery kit is the minimum — mud tires and a winch are smarter. Cell service drops to zero within 15 kilometres of Highway 117 and stays gone. Fuel in Louvicourt or Témiscaming before entry; there is nothing inside. Summer through early fall is the window — the spring thaw turns interior tracks into axle-deep soup. The payoff is real isolation, walleye-thick lakes every few kilometres, and campsites that see fewer humans than moose per week.
