Chemin de la Zec Harricana — Abitibi-Témiscamingue Clay Belt Forestry Loop
Abitibi clay belt isolation at its most unforgiving.
The Harricana River drains north toward James Bay through one of Quebec’s flattest and least-visited landscapes. The Zone d’exploitation contrôlée Harricana road network begins east of Amos and pushes into a boreal plateau that looks the same in every direction — which is exactly why you need a GPS and a full fuel load before you leave pavement. The clay belt soil turns these roads into axle-deep grease after rain; in dry stretches they’re washboard gravel that’ll rattle fillings loose. The real draw is the absolute isolation: caribou migration corridors, nesting osprey on every lake, and the kind of silence that makes city people uncomfortable. Key waypoint is the Harricana River ford at kilometre 47, which runs knee-deep in summer but can be impassable during spring melt.
This is Moderate to Difficult depending on recent rainfall. High-clearance 4WD is the minimum; a recovery kit and a buddy vehicle are strongly recommended if you’re going deep. The ZEC requires a seasonal access permit purchased online through the Fédération québécoise des gestionnaires de zecs — budget around $25 CAD for a day pass. Fuel in Amos; nothing exists past the entry gate. Best window is July through early October. Cell service is zero inside the ZEC. Bring satellite communication. Water from the river is available but treat everything. Dispersed camping is permitted in designated zones throughout the ZEC.
