Chemin de la Rivière Broadback — Eeyou Istchee Forestry Road to James Bay Lowlands

Cree homeland, log trucks, and no way out but forward.

Difficult

The Broadback River drains a massive chunk of the boreal interior between Chibougamau and the James Bay coast, and the forestry road network that follows its valley is the kind of driving that resets your sense of scale. Starting from the Chibougamau region and pressing northwest toward the lowlands, you’re on active Resolute Forest Products and MRN-managed tracks that see log trucks daily during the season — pull over and let them pass, they’re not stopping. The road deteriorates significantly past the Kilometre 180 mark where logging activity thins out, with deep rutting, beaver flooding across the track surface, and at least three unbridged crossings of Broadback tributaries that require careful scouting. Cree communities including Waswanipi have traditional land use throughout this corridor — respect it.

This is a difficult multi-day route demanding a capable rig — a built truck or Jeep with recovery gear, a high-lift jack, drag chain, and at minimum two spare tires. Don’t attempt solo. Cell coverage ends at Chibougamau and doesn’t return. A satellite communicator is non-negotiable. The Cree Nation of Eeyou Istchee administers significant portions of this territory; contact the Cree Regional Authority before entering to confirm access protocols. Best season is mid-July through early September when water levels drop. Fuel and supplies in Chibougamau — the last real town you’ll see for a very long time.
