Chemin du Lac Mégantic — Frontière Circuit via Woburn and Piopolis

Quebec's forgotten border highlands above Mégantic.

Difficult

The highlands east of Lac-Mégantic brush the Maine border at one of Quebec’s most forgotten corners — the old Scottish and Irish settler country around Woburn and Piopolis that the logging industry inherited and the overlanding crowd has barely noticed. The Chemin du Lac Mégantic circuit departs Woburn on provincial forestry roads climbing east into the Boundary Range, passing the abandoned farm lots of the Mégantic Highlands before dropping toward Piopolis on the lake’s western shore. The border-area ridge section between Woburn and Frontenac is the crux — narrow, exposed bedrock shelves with soft gravel shoulders and a couple of seasonal stream fords that get gnarly in high water. You’re genuinely in bear country out here, which feels right.

A solid high-clearance 4WD handles this in dry conditions; lockers add confidence on the ridge section. No access fees but some sections pass through private timber tenure — stay on the main track. Best months are July through early October; hunting season in fall means fluorescent orange is not optional. Lac-Mégantic town is your only fuel and supply stop — fill up and carry a spare 20 litres. The area has limited cell coverage in valleys and none on the ridges. The historical weight of the Lac-Mégantic rail disaster (2013) sits heavy in town — respect it when you pass through.
