Rawson Lake Road — Fort Simpson to Rawson Lake Wilderness

Muskeg, moose, and zero cell bars.

Difficult

Pull out of Fort Simpson heading northwest on the Rawson Lake Road and the pavement disappears within minutes — replaced by soft clay, spruce root crossings, and stretches of corduroy through muskeg that’ll test your axle articulation before you’re five kilometres in. The route follows an old trapline and resource access corridor through the Mackenzie Valley lowlands, threading between unnamed lakes and beaver-flooded flats. You’ll hit at least three significant mud holes in the middle section that have swallowed bumpers without apology, and the road narrows to single-track through dense black spruce where windfall pruning is seasonal luck. Rawson Lake itself sits at the end of the run — glassy, isolated, surrounded by nothing but boreal forest and the odd moose ankle-deep in the shallows.

This is a mud-season killer and an early-summer nightmare — run it August through September when the ground firms up slightly and bugs thin out. High-clearance 4WD is the minimum; lockers front and rear are honest requirements, not suggestions. Fuel up in Fort Simpson because there’s nothing out there. No cell service, no rangers, no cavalry. Bring a sat communicator, recovery gear, and enough food and water to sit out a mechanical issue for two days. The reward is total isolation and one of the quietest campsites in the Northwest Territories.
