Nahanni Butte to Naha Dehé Wilderness Road — South Nahanni River Confluence

The sentinel butte at the edge of Nahanni country.

Moderate

The road to Nahanni Butte starts at a barge crossing on the Liard River near Fort Simpson and punches roughly 30 km southwest through black spruce muskeg and river flats to the small Dene community at the base of Nahanni Butte — a 700-metre flat-topped sentinel that dominates the skyline. This is the gateway approach for those running boats up the South Nahanni toward Virginia Falls, and the overlanding approach gives you a genuine sense of just how remote and wild this corner of the NWT actually is. Soft shoulders, mud wallows after rain, and one low-lying creek crossing keep it real.

A stock 4WD with good all-terrain tires handles this in dry conditions, but after significant rainfall it earns a difficult rating fast — the muskeg sections turn greasy and will swallow unprepared rigs. No fuel beyond Fort Simpson, so top off before you leave. Cell service disappears completely once you leave the highway. Dispersed camping is possible along the route but respect the community’s traditional lands. Best run late June through August when the frost-heaved track has dried out. This one rewards patience and respect — it’s not a sport run, it’s a journey to somewhere that feels genuinely forgotten.
