Montague Roadhouse Site — Alaska Highway Historic Mile 816 Viewpoint
Johnson’s Crossing sits at the confluence of the Teslin River and the Alaska Highway, and the surrounding corridor is thick with WWII-era infrastructure history. The Canol Heritage Trail launched from this general area, and the original roadhouse sites along the highway here were critical resupply points during the 1942–43 construction push. Pull off at the Johnson’s Crossing viewpoint — the bridge over the Teslin River is one of the most photographed original Alaska Highway structures still standing. You’re looking at a corridor that fuelled the Northwest Staging Route and the Canol pipeline project simultaneously.
Access is straightforward — pavement the whole way on the Alaska Highway. Good cell signal near the lodge. Useful staging point for anyone heading north toward Carmacks or east toward Watson Lake. Fuel and basic groceries available at Johnson’s Crossing Lodge nearby.
