Minto Lakes — Yukon River Flats Migratory Bird Viewpoint
The Minto Lakes area sits in the broad Yukon River flats between Carmacks and the Klondike, a sprawling mosaic of shallow lakes, sedge meadows, and willow thickets. Spring and fall migrations here are staggering — tens of thousands of ducks, geese, swans, and shorebirds pack these flats. Even outside peak migration it’s prime moose, beaver, and sandhill crane country. Roadside pullouts along the North Klondike Highway give you elevated views across the flats toward the distant Pelly Hills.
Access is from the North Klondike Highway (Highway 2) roughly between Carmacks and Pelly Crossing. No formal facilities at the viewpoint pullouts — just gravel shoulder and big sky. Spring breakup timing matters here; the flats flood unpredictably. Cell service is essentially zero. Bring binoculars — this is a legit ornithological stop even if you’re just blasting through on your way to Dawson.
