Moose Hide Slide — Dawson City Yukon River Bluff Viewpoint
The Moose Hide Slide is the unmistakable pale scar on the hillside directly above Dawson City, caused by a large prehistoric landslide that scraped away the boreal forest down to raw mineral soil. It’s been a navigation reference on the Yukon River for over a century and is deeply tied to the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation’s cultural history — the Moose Hide Village site sits at its base. For overlanders rolling into Dawson off the Top of the World Highway or the Dempster, it’s your visual confirmation you’ve arrived at one of the most storied towns in the Canadian North.
The slide itself is best viewed from the George Black Ferry crossing or from the Dawson City waterfront. A trail also leads from downtown out to Moose Hide Village — roughly 4 kilometres one way on foot. No vehicle access beyond the waterfront. Worth a walk or a hard look before you resupply and head back out on the dirt.
