Crooked Creek Road — Dawson City to Dominion Creek Gold Fields
Gold rush country. Still running gravel.
Crooked Creek Road branches off Hunker Creek Road south of Dawson City and punches into the Dominion Creek watershed — one of the richest placer gold drainages in the entire Klondike. The road rolls through boreal hillsides scarred white by generations of hydraulic mining, past abandoned dredge tailings that stretch like frozen sea swells across the valley floor. Active mining claims are still worked here every summer, so you’ll share the road with gravel trucks and cat trains moving equipment between operations. The route climbs onto benches above the creek before dropping back to valley bottom near the gold-bearing gravels that first sent prospectors scrambling in 1896. Keep your eyes on the creek banks — gold panning is part of the culture here.
This is a moderate-to-difficult route depending on recent weather. Dry conditions make it accessible to a stock 4WD with decent ground clearance, but rainfall turns the clay cutbanks into a greasy mess that will humble rigs without mud-terrain tires. Mining traffic is heavy June through September — watch your mirrors and pull over for heavy equipment. Fuel and supplies in Dawson City before departure; there’s nothing on route. The real payoff is driving through a living piece of Klondike history, where the gold rush never actually ended — it just got mechanized. Camping is possible on Crown land away from active claims.
