Skookum Jim to Five Finger Rapids Mining Road — Whitehorse to Yukon River Bench
Gold Rush history along the Yukon River bench.
Five Finger Rapids stopped more than a few stampeder scows cold during the 1898 rush, and the overland route that shadowed this stretch of the Yukon River tells the same rough story. Starting from the Whitehorse area and running northeast along the river bench past the old Skookum Jim historic site near Carcross junction, this gravel-and-clay route tracks the Yukon River corridor through boreal flats and low sandstone bluffs before arriving at the Five Finger Rapids viewpoint and the adjacent historic telegraph line corridor. The road surface is generally well-maintained gravel for the first two-thirds, deteriorating to rutted clay bench road in the final approach where seasonal drainage carves regular washouts across the track.
High clearance is mandatory; 4WD is strongly recommended and required after rain when the clay sections turn slick. A stock truck with all-terrain tires handles this fine in dry conditions, making it a solid Moderate route for newer overlanders wanting genuine Yukon history without full technical commitment. The Five Finger Rapids viewpoint rewards the drive with one of the most photographed stretches of the Yukon River. Fuel in Whitehorse or Carmacks. No services en route. Best late May through September before fall rains turn the clay sections into a mess.
