Sixtymile River Canyon Road — Dawson City to Bedrock Creek Placer Fields
Pre-Klondike gold country with zero polish.
The Sixtymile country was being worked for gold before the Klondike rush hit, and the rough track heading west from Dawson City into this river system has never really been upgraded from its original state. Setting out near the Yukon River ferry landing, the road tracks southwest along creek benches before descending into the Sixtymile River drainage — a canyon system that feels significantly more remote than its proximity to Dawson suggests. Active placer operations dot the creeks; you’ll hear equipment running and smell diesel. Bedrock Creek is the practical turnaround for most rigs — past that, the track degrades to a mining access trail with no guaranteed turnaround space and private claim boundaries closing off the valley floor.
High clearance is mandatory; 4WD is essential from the first creek ford. The road surface alternates between compacted gravel, loose shale, and summer-wet muck. Mining traffic is real and operators have right-of-way — give them room and don’t stop on active claim land. No formal camping sites exist; gravel bars above the high-water mark are your best option. Best window is mid-June to early September. Fuel in Dawson City before you leave — Top of the World highway fuel is expensive and limited. What this road delivers is unglamorous, industrial-era Yukon gold country that hasn’t been polished for tourism, and that’s exactly the point.
