Kluane Lake North Shore Road — Burwash Landing to Pine Valley
Kluane's wild north edge, zero tourists.
Most Alaska Highway travelers roll past Burwash Landing without stopping — their loss. The North Shore Road peels off the Alaska Highway just north of town and follows the raw northwestern edge of Kluane Lake, the Yukon’s largest, through a landscape carved by the same tectonic violence that built the Saint Elias Mountains looming to the southwest. The track passes the ruins of early 20th-century homesteads and prospector camps, and the Shakwak Trench — the fault valley the Alaska Highway follows — is visible in full geological drama from several high points. Watch for grizzlies along the lakeshore; this is dense bear country and not a stretch to treat casually.
The road is unmaintained gravel and dirt with soft shoulders in wet conditions, requiring a high-clearance vehicle at minimum — a capable 4WD is a smarter choice. There are no services of any kind beyond Burwash Landing. Carry water, extra fuel, and bear spray. No formal campgrounds exist on this segment; dispersed camping along the lake is possible but practice Leave No Trace strictly — this is within the Kluane National Park and Reserve buffer zone. Best season is June through September. No permits required for the road itself, though Parks Canada regulations apply near the park boundary.
