Farwell Canyon — Chilcotin River Hoodoos Overlook
Farwell Canyon doesn’t get the same traffic as the more marketed BC viewpoints, and that’s exactly why you should stop. The hoodoos here rise steeply above the Chilcotin River in banded ochre and tan columns — the kind of geology that stops you mid-drive. This is a legitimate overlanding POI on the Chilcotin plateau, sitting on the route between Williams Lake and Tatla Lake along Farwell Canyon Road, a well-documented gravel corridor. Big horn sheep are common on the canyon walls, especially in shoulder season.
Access is via gravel from the Riske Creek junction off Highway 20 — high-clearance 2WD handles it fine in dry conditions. There’s no formal campground at the overlook itself, but the surrounding Crown land has seen dispersed camping for decades. No services, no cell, no signs telling you what to do. Drive to the edge, look down, and figure out your next move.
BC Interior hoodoos — no crowds, no fuss.
