Sparwood — Elk River Trailhead and Valley Floor Viewpoint

Point of Interest

Just east of Sparwood on Highway 3, this pullout gives you a clean sightline down the Elk River valley toward the BC-Alberta border terrain — the same drainage that feeds into Elk Lakes Provincial Park and the Elk Pass FSR routes. It’s not a destination on its own, but it’s a legitimate trip-planning anchor: you can see the ridge lines you’re about to drive into, check your paper maps against the terrain, and get a sense of snow conditions on the high ridges before committing to the Elk Pass FSR. The Crowsnest Mountains loom to the east, the Flathead Range rolls south.

This is Highway 3 grade, fully paved, accessible by any vehicle year-round. The viewpoint itself is unmarked — just a wide gravel shoulder used by locals and passing truckers alike. Cell service is decent here on Sparwood’s towers. If you’re running the Elk Valley backcountry loops out of Sparwood, this is a logical last-light orientation stop before camp.

Elk Valley floor view — scope your route before you commit.
