Coquihalla Summit Recreation Area — Coldwater Viewpoint
The Coquihalla Summit Recreation Area sits right at the top of the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5) at roughly 1,244 metres — one of the few places in BC where you can pull off a major corridor and actually stand in real alpine terrain without hiking. The Coldwater viewpoint looks northwest over the Coldwater River drainage and the jagged ridgeline above it. It’s stark, wind-scoured country, and when the clouds roll through in October it looks like the end of the world. There’s a rest area with pit toilets and a few interpretive signs about the historic Coquihalla Pass Brigade Trail used by the HBC.
This sits right on the paved highway — any rig stops here, no clearance needed. It’s a practical fuel-and-stretch stop before dropping into Merritt or before the final push toward Hope. In winter the summit is frequently closed or treacherous; chain-up requirements are common October through April. No camping on-site, but it’s a useful orientation point for the Nicola Valley and Manning Park approach routes.
