Rock Lake–Solomon Creek Wildland Backcountry Road — Willmore Gateway (Alberta)

Rock Lake sits at the edge of Willmore Wilderness Park — the largest provincial wilderness area in Alberta — and the access road from Highway 40 north of Grande Cache makes you feel every kilometer of the approach. The route follows the Smoky River drainage before climbing into the Solomon Creek valley where the road deteriorates into rutted gravel, mud wallows, and exposed shelf cuts above creek drainages. Rock Lake itself is a payoff: cold, clear glacial water backed by a limestone headwall, with the trailheads for Willmore’s interior pushing off from the north end of the lakeshore. It’s a legitimate gateway trail for anyone wanting to stage a longer wilderness expedition into the Rockies’ most undervisited country.

High clearance is required year-round; 4WD becomes mandatory in wet weather when the clay sections turn to grease. The road is maintained but not regularly graded — expect frost heaves, embedded rock, and narrow passing spots. Best season is late June through September. Grande Cache is your last fuel and supplies stop, roughly 45 km south. No permit needed for road travel, but self-registration is required at the provincial park boundary. Cell service cuts out well before you reach the lake. Dispersed camping exists along Solomon Creek; the provincial campground at Rock Lake fills on summer weekends.
