Forestry Trunk Road — Hwy 734 Brazeau River to Nordegg South (Alberta)

Coal Branch ghosts and Brazeau river mud.

Moderate

This section of Highway 734 north of the Brazeau River is pure Alberta foothills — rolling gravel, creek crossings, cutline tangents, and the kind of solitude that only comes when you’re three hours from a paved road. The route winds through dense spruce and lodgepole pine, climbing past the Violet Grove cutblocks before dropping toward the North Saskatchewan drainage near Nordegg. The Brazeau River crossing itself is a notable waypoint — a wide, braided ford that can run fast and deep in June runoff. Most rigs will want to probe it before committing. Coal Branch mining history is everywhere here; derelict tipple structures and abandoned sidings ghost the treeline.

Moderate difficulty in dry conditions, but rain turns the clay-heavy sections to pure axle grease. A capable high-clearance 4WD with all-terrain tires is the minimum — a locker helps at the Brazeau ford in high water. No permit required for travel, but a good paper map or downloaded offline topo is non-negotiable since cell service is effectively zero. Best window is July through September. Nordegg is the last fuel stop — fill up. Dispersed camping is permitted in the Green Zone throughout.
