Lightning Lake Campground — E.C. Manning Provincial Park
Lightning Lake is the flagship campground inside E.C. Manning Provincial Park, sitting right on the lake with mountain views in every direction. It’s a proper BC Parks facility — flush toilets, hot showers, fire rings, and picnic tables — but it’s the location that matters to overlanders. You’re minutes from the Blackwall Road alpine access, the Heather Trail system, and Highway 3 connecting Hope to Princeton. It fills up fast on summer weekends; if you’re rolling through mid-July on a Friday, you need a reservation. Shoulder season — late September especially — is spectacular and uncrowded.
Access is easy off Highway 3, fully paved to the campground. Reservation through Discover Camping is strongly recommended June through August. Fire restrictions in Manning Park can go full prohibition in dry years — check BC Wildfire before arrival. Good cell signal near the day-use area; sites further back are spottier.
Manning Park's best basecamp, right on the lake.
