Kananaskis — Cataract Creek to Upper Oldman Backcountry Road
Where Kananaskis ends and real backcountry begins.
Cataract Creek campground sits at the end of Hwy 940 where the pavement gives up entirely, and the real Kananaskis starts. The backcountry road pushing south and west from here into the Upper Oldman drainage is one of the most underrated drives in the province. The route winds through spruce-fir forest, crosses multiple tributary streams off Cataract Creek, and eventually opens into a wide valley with unobstructed views of the Livingstone and Highwood ranges. The creek crossings are the hazard — multiple unnamed fords can be shin-deep in July and chest-deep by mid-June snowmelt, and there’s no bridge infrastructure to save you if you misjudge.
This route demands a legitimate 4WD with solid clearance and ideally a front locker for the rocky ford approaches. Best attempted late July through September when water levels drop and the mud firms up. Day-use doesn’t require a Kananaskis Conservation Pass but overnight camping does — pick one up beforehand online or at the Barrier Lake Visitor Centre. No fuel within the area; load up in Longview or Highwood Junction. Cell service drops to nothing once you leave the main Kananaskis trail corridor. What you’re rewarded with is genuine Rocky Mountain solitude just two hours from Calgary.
