Flathead River — Highway 3 Crossing Viewpoint
Where Highway 3 clips the Elk River watershed just east of Sparwood, you’re standing in the last paved real estate before the Flathead drainage swallows you whole. This isn’t a formal overlook — it’s a known orientation point for rigs heading south on the Frypan Mountain FSR or the Forestry Trunk Road toward Akamina-Kishinena Provincial Park. The Flathead Valley beyond here is one of the most biologically rich corridors in North America — grizzly, elk, wolf — and the road south is unpaved, unsigned in stretches, and seriously remote. Pull over, look at your map, and make sure you’ve got fuel.
Sparwood has the last reliable fuel before you drop into the valley — confirm your spare and recovery gear here. The FSR access roads deteriorate quickly after rain. Spring runoff closes lower crossings into June most years. No facilities at the viewpoint itself.
Last pavement before the Flathead swallows you.
