Mosquito Flats Road to Spectrum Pass — Telkwa Range
Telkwa Range alpine access the easy rigs skip.
The Telkwa Range sits in BC’s Bulkley Valley between Smithers and Houston, and while the peaks aren’t the tallest in the province, the access roads up here have a way of humbling rigs that underestimated them. Mosquito Flats Road departs the Telkwa Coal Mine Road corridor and climbs aggressively through timber into open subalpine terrain. The push toward Spectrum Pass crosses several unnamed creek drainages — some with cut banks that require careful line selection — before breaking into the alpine bowl where the views across to Hudson Bay Mountain and the Babine Range open up hard. This is Wet’suwet’en traditional territory, and the land carries that weight.
You need a capable 4×4 with solid ground clearance; soft-roader SUVs have no business above the timber line here. The road surface alternates between loose volcanic rock, wet clay, and exposed root sections. Snow lingers on the pass well into July most years — check conditions before committing. Fuel in Smithers or Houston; neither is far. No permit required for the FSR portion. Dispersed camping is available in the subalpine meadows, but pack out everything — this area sees enough hunting pressure that garbage left behind is a real bear safety issue. Cell service vanishes within the first few kilometres of the climb.
