Klappan River Coal Access Road

The Klappan River road represents one of northern BC’s most isolated industrial routes, built to service coal exploration in the Sacred Headwaters region before environmental concerns shut down operations. Starting from Highway 37 near Iskut, this rough track punches 85 kilometers into untouched wilderness, crossing the Klappan River multiple times and climbing to exploration sites above 4,500 feet elevation. The road ends at abandoned drill camps where Anthracite Creek meets the Klappan, surrounded by some of Canada’s most pristine alpine terrain.

Extreme remoteness and challenging terrain demand expedition-level preparation. High-clearance 4WD with full skid plating essential for river crossings and jagged bedrock sections. No services for 200+ kilometers—carry spare parts, extra fuel, satellite communication. Summer-only access due to severe weather and creek flooding. First Nations cultural protocols apply in this sacred watershed. Exceptional wildlife viewing includes caribou, grizzlies, and pristine salmon runs reward the committed overlander.
