Nazko Road to Kluskus Lakes

Volcanic plateau route to pristine Chilcotin fishing lakes.

Moderate

The Nazko Road stretches 85 kilometers northwest from Quesnel into the heart of Dakelh (Carrier) First Nations territory, following ancient trading routes across the rolling Chilcotin plateau to the remote Kluskus Lakes system. This gravel and dirt track passes through a landscape shaped by massive volcanic eruptions, with the Nazko Cone—one of Canada’s youngest volcanoes—dominating the horizon. The road deteriorates significantly after Nazko village, becoming a true backcountry challenge with deep mud holes, washouts, and creek crossings that can stop progress dead during spring runoff.

Moderate difficulty requiring high clearance and good ground clearance for the inevitable washboard and mud. Best accessed June through September when the worst of the spring mud has dried, though wet weather can turn sections into quagmires overnight. Respect First Nations territory and traditional use—this isn’t just driving, it’s traveling through living culture. Fuel and supplies in Quesnel are essential; there’s nothing between civilization and the lakes except wilderness. The reward is some of the finest lake trout and rainbow fishing in central BC, plus complete solitude in country where you might not see another soul for days.
