Wells Gray Park Clearwater River Road
Volcanic backcountry to Clearwater River headwaters
The Clearwater River Road cuts deep into Wells Gray Provincial Park’s volcanic heart, threading between ancient lava flows and glacier-carved valleys. This 35-kilometer route starts from the main park highway and winds north through dense subalpine forest to reach the headwaters of the Clearwater River system. The road deteriorates significantly after the 20-kilometer mark, with several creek crossings and steep rocky sections that’ll test your vehicle’s ground clearance around the Azure Lake turnoff.
This is genuine backcountry access requiring high-clearance 4WD and careful tire placement over loose volcanic rock. Best tackled June through September when snow clears the higher elevations. No permits needed but fuel up in Clearwater town—there’s nothing out here except pristine wilderness camping along the river flats. The payoff is world-class trout fishing, massive old-growth cedars, and some of the most untouched country in the province.
