Duffy Lake Road to Birken
Abandoned logging roads through untouched rainforest.
The abandoned logging roads that branch north from Duffy Lake Road near Birken ghost town offer some of the most pristine old-growth forest access in the Sea-to-Sky corridor. This network of deteriorating Forest Service roads winds through massive Douglas fir and cedar stands that escaped the saw, passing the ruins of 1940s logging camps and crossing multiple creek systems via aging wooden bridges. The main route follows what was once the Birken Valley Timber Company’s primary haul road, now reclaimed by alder and salmonberry but still passable to determined drivers.
This is moderate territory requiring high-clearance 4WD and recovery gear — several creek crossings have washed out culverts, and fallen timber regularly blocks the route. Best tackled June through October when creek levels drop, though early season means dealing with snowpack at higher elevations. No permits required but fuel up in Pemberton as the nearest services are hours away. What you get is solitude among some of BC’s last untouched coastal temperate rainforest, plus the satisfaction of following routes that haven’t seen regular traffic since the 1970s.
