Wells Gray Park Helmcken Falls Road
Remote volcanic road to Canada's fourth-highest falls
The gravel road to Helmcken Falls cuts deep into Wells Gray Provincial Park’s volcanic heart, winding past ancient lava flows and through dense boreal forest before delivering you to the rim of Canada’s fourth-highest waterfall at 463 feet. This 40-kilometer route branches off the Clearwater Valley Road and climbs steadily through terrain shaped by the Clearwater River volcano, with several creek crossings and steep grades that test traction on loose volcanic gravel. The road passes Ray Farm, a historic homestead from the early 1900s, before reaching the falls viewpoint where the Murtle River plunges into a massive canyon carved from columnar basalt.
This is a moderate high-clearance route that stock 4WD vehicles can handle in dry conditions, though the volcanic gravel becomes treacherous when wet. Summer through early fall offers the best access, with snow typically blocking the upper sections from November to May. No permits required, but fuel up in Clearwater as there are no services beyond the park entrance. Backcountry camping is allowed at designated spots along the route. The payoff is standing at one of BC’s most spectacular waterfalls with virtually no crowds, plus access to some of the best volcanic geology viewing in the province.
