Chilko Lake Road
Alpine lake perfection in the heart of Chilcotin country
The Chilko Lake Road cuts 85 kilometers of gravel and rocky track from Tatla Lake through classic Chilcotin ranch country to the shores of BC’s fourth-largest natural lake. You’ll cross the Chilko River twice—first at the historic Tatlayoko Valley crossing where the old bridge requires careful spotting, then again at the outflow where the lake dumps into what becomes the Chilko River proper. The road climbs through aspen and Douglas fir before opening into the alpine bowl where Chilko Lake stretches 180 square kilometers beneath the glacier-draped Coast Mountains.
This is moderate 4×4 territory—stock clearance handles it fine, but the washboard and occasional deep ruts will test your fillings. Late June through September offers the best conditions when snowmelt subsides and the access isn’t gated. No permits needed, but fuel up in Tatla Lake and pack water—the nearest services are 90 kilometers behind you. Prime fishing for rainbow and lake trout, plus some of the most spectacular mountain lake camping in the province. The kind of place that reminds you why BC’s backcountry beats anything south of the 49th.
