Laguna Tortuguero to Playa Escondida Coastal Track
Tidal crossings to secret Caribbean beach
Starting at the Laguna Tortuguero Natural Reserve, this 6.8-mile coastal track follows fishermen’s trails and abandoned sugar plantation roads through pristine mangrove channels and salt marshes. The route crosses three tidal inlets via submerged concrete causeways that disappear at high tide, requiring careful timing with tidal charts. Beyond the mangroves, deep sand sections challenge traction as the trail parallels hidden coves where loggerhead turtles nest from May through August.
This difficult route demands 4WD with aired-down tires, recovery gear, and tide timing knowledge. High tide makes crossings impassable, while spring tides can flood the entire middle section. Best attempted December through March when northeast trades keep mosquitoes down and surf is calmer. No permits required but respect nesting areas during turtle season. The reward is Playa Escondida, a pristine half-mile beach with no development, perfect for solitude camping under coconut palms with world-class snorkeling just offshore.
