Bosque Estatal de Carite Charco Azul Road
Cloud forest pools via technical mountain ascent
The narrow dirt track to Charco Azul winds 4.2 miles through dense cloud forest from Route 184, climbing steadily past massive cecropia trees draped in Spanish moss. Multiple stream crossings demand careful line choice, especially after tropical rains when rocks become slick and water levels rise. The steepest section, a 15% grade known locally as “La Subida del Diablo,” tests traction and engine cooling as the trail switchbacks through thick bamboo groves before reaching the crystalline pools.
This moderate technical route requires high-clearance 4WD with skid plates and good tires. Wet season (May through November) makes crossings challenging and mud deep. Dry months offer better grip but dusty conditions. No permits needed, but camping isn’t allowed in the forest reserve. The payoff is world-class swimming holes surrounded by virgin rainforest, plus potential sightings of Puerto Rican parrots and coquí frogs that make this island’s soundtrack.
