Carite State Forest Observatory Ridge Trail
Cloud forest technical climb to abandoned towers.
The old access road to Carite’s communication towers winds through dense cloud forest at 3,000 feet, where morning mist clings to sierra palm and tabonuco trees. You’ll navigate washouts and fallen logs on this forgotten maintenance road that dead-ends at a cluster of abandoned radio equipment with sweeping views toward the Caribbean coast. The real challenge comes at kilometer 4, where Hurricane María’s damage created a boulder field that requires careful line selection.
This is moderate technical terrain demanding high clearance and 4WD low range for the steepest pitches. Mud can be treacherous during the May-October wet season; December through April offers better traction but cooler temperatures mean thick fog can roll in fast. No permits needed, but fuel up in Cayey before heading up — there’s nothing but forest for miles. The payoff is camping among the towers with views few locals ever see.
