Maricao State Forest Rio Maricao Trail
Coffee country creek crossings and canopy climbs
The Rio Maricao Trail cuts through some of Puerto Rico’s thickest mountain forest, where the air stays thick with humidity and the canopy blocks out most daylight even at noon. This old coffee plantation access road winds along the Maricao River through dense stands of sierra palm and tabonuco trees, crossing the creek six times before hitting the brutal limestone climb to Torre de Observación. The trail passes remnants of 1930s CCC stone bridges and ends at the fire tower with views across the Cordillera Central.
This is a moderate technical challenge requiring high-clearance 4WD and decent rock-crawling skills for the final ascent. Creek crossings stay shallow except during heavy rains when they can flash flood. Best tackled May through November when the forest roads dry out somewhat. No permits needed, but fuel up in Maricao town — it’s 18 miles of rough trail with zero cell service. You’ll earn those mountain views and some serious rainforest therapy.
