The infamous “Stairway to Heaven” section near mile 25 features 15% grades with loose rock surfaces that challenge even experienced mountain drivers, while Lago Guineo’s dam crossing requires precise wheel placement on narrow concrete spillways.

Weather changes fast at altitude — what starts as sunny Caribbean morning can turn to zero-visibility fog in minutes. Best attempted May-August during stable weather patterns, though afternoon thunderstorms are always possible. No permits required, but fuel up in Cayey since gas stations disappear for the middle 30 miles.
