Camuy Caves to Quebradillas Coast Road
Karst caves to Caribbean cliffs through limestone maze
This 15-mile limestone karst adventure starts at the famous Camuy Caves, following old plantation roads and cattle tracks through some of Puerto Rico’s most dramatic underground geology. The route threads between massive sinkholes and mogotes (limestone hills), passing abandoned sugar mill ruins and crossing seasonal arroyos that disappear into underground rivers. Mile 8 hits the notorious “Limestone Ledge” — a narrow shelf carved into vertical karst walls where one wrong move drops you 200 feet into a cenote.
Moderate difficulty requiring stock high-clearance and basic recovery gear for the inevitable stuck-in-limestone-mud moment. Dry season (December-April) is mandatory — flash floods turn this route deadly during hurricane season. No permits needed, but bring plenty of water since natural sources vanish underground. The reward is reaching Quebradillas’ wild north coast where 300-foot cliffs meet pristine beaches accessible only by 4WD, plus world-class cave photography opportunities in untouched limestone chambers.
