Harrison-Crawford State Forest Pioneer Ridge Trail
Limestone quarry roads with Ohio River Valley views
Pioneer Ridge follows old limestone quarry haul roads through Harrison-Crawford’s 24,000 rugged acres, climbing from the Blue River bottoms to ridgetop views of the Ohio River Valley 400 feet below. The route starts easy on gravel forest roads but gets interesting past the abandoned Delaney Quarry ruins, where the trail drops down a technical limestone shelf descent that’s claimed more than one oil pan. Mile 8 hits the steepest challenge—a rocky switchback locals call “Brake Check Hill” that demands low-range crawling and precise wheel placement.
High-clearance vehicles handle most sections, but the technical descents require 4WD with good tires and recovery points. Spring can turn the clay sections slippery, while summer offers the best conditions for rock crawling. No permits needed for the main trail, but dispersed camping requires checking with forest headquarters. You’ll find primitive sites along the ridgeline with sweeping views and decent cell service for emergencies. It’s the closest thing Indiana offers to real mountain driving without leaving the state.
