Yellowbank Creek Wildlife Area Hunting Access Roads

Reclaimed mining country adventure

Easy

Yellowbank Creek Wildlife Area’s hunting access roads snake through 2,000 acres of reclaimed strip mine country where oak savanna meets reconstructed prairie, creating a patchwork landscape that floods regularly and dries to concrete-hard clay. The main loop follows old mining roads and newer conservation tracks, with the roughest section being the three-mile southern boundary road that parallels Yellowbank Creek through bottomland timber where spring floods regularly wash out culverts and deposit log jams.

This isn’t technical wheeling but it’s honest backcountry driving that’ll test your patience more than your rig—standard 4WD handles it fine when dry, but avoid it entirely during wet seasons when the clay becomes impassable soup. Open year-round except during managed hunts (check IDNR calendar), no permits required. Best accessed March through November. Primitive camping prohibited but nearby Shakamak State Park offers facilities. Perfect for wildlife photography and solitude, with excellent birding along the creek bottoms.
