Adirondack Park Buckhorn Ponds Road

Rocky wilderness access to remote Adirondack ponds

Difficult

Buckhorn Ponds Road penetrates deep into the St. Regis Canoe Area, following an old tote road that loggers used to reach timber stands around Upper and Lower Buckhorn Ponds. The road deteriorates progressively as you push deeper into the wilderness, transitioning from maintained gravel to boulder-strewn track with embedded rocks that’ll scrape frames and test breakover angles. The final mile requires careful route-finding around washouts and over granite ledges before reaching the trailhead parking area.

This is difficult terrain demanding experienced drivers with high-clearance 4WD, skid plates, and aggressive tires. Rock damage is common — bring a tire repair kit and consider tire chains for the worst ledge sections. Access typically restricted during mud season (April-May) and hunting seasons require extra caution. No services for 40+ miles, so carry extra fuel, water, and recovery gear. The reward is access to some of the Adirondacks’ most pristine backcountry, with designated wilderness camping at the ponds for those packing in canoes or hiking gear.
