Vermont Route 100 Cotton Brook Road

Green Mountain granite challenge with Vermont views

Moderate

Cotton Brook Road splits off Vermont Route 100 like a forgotten artery into the Green Mountain National Forest, where logging trucks once hauled timber down granite ledges that’ll test your truck’s articulation. The road climbs through dense hardwood forests to Cotton Brook Falls, then continues past abandoned quarry sites where massive granite blocks still sit scattered like dice thrown by giants. Key waypoints include the Cotton Brook Bridge crossing and the technical rock garden at mile marker 4.5.

This is legitimate moderate-difficult terrain requiring real 4WD with low range and skid plates — stock trucks will struggle on the granite slabs. Best tackled June through October when streams are manageable and road isn’t washed out from spring runoff. No permits needed, but respect private logging operations. Dispersed camping available at several cleared sites. You’ll earn solitude, genuine Vermont backcountry, and some of the best fall foliage views in New England if you time it right.
