Canol Heritage Trail Access Road

WWII pipeline route through arctic wilderness.

Difficult

The Canol Heritage Trail traces the abandoned WWII pipeline from Norman Wells to the Yukon border, following 372 kilometers of gravel road and trail that once carried oil to support the Alaska Highway construction. Built in 1943 at enormous cost and abandoned two years later, the route crosses the Mackenzie Mountains through territory where rusted pipeline sections and military equipment still litter the landscape like mechanical archaeology. The road proper runs about 230 kilometers from Norman Wells before deteriorating into an ATV track, passing through country where grizzlies outnumber humans and the midnight sun rules summer skies.

This is serious backcountry requiring high-clearance 4WD and self-sufficiency gear for multi-day expeditions into genuine wilderness. The route stays rough year-round but summer offers the only practical access window for vehicles. Fuel, food, and emergency equipment are mandatory—the nearest services after Norman Wells are literally in another territory. River crossings, washouts, and boulder fields make this a technical challenge that rewards you with solitude few Canadians ever experience. The pipeline’s ghostly remains tell the story of wartime desperation meeting northern reality, where nature always wins in the end.
