BLM Steens Mountain Kiger Gorge Dispersed Area
Scattered sites in juniper and sagebrush along the lower Steens Mountain loop road, most with sweeping views east across the Alvord Desert. Popular spots near Kiger Gorge overlook but sites spread for miles along the road. Wild horses frequent the area — keep food secure and don’t approach. No facilities, no water, no cell service. Fire restrictions common June through September.
Loop road is graded gravel, manageable by any vehicle in good weather. Gets rough and muddy with rain, snow closes upper sections October through June. Bring layers — elevation changes from 4000 to 6000 feet mean big temperature swings even in summer.
