Pembina Gorge Escarpment Trail
North Dakota's deepest gorge challenge
The Pembina Gorge cuts a 400-foot gash through the prairie like nature’s own surgical scar, and this trail takes you straight down the throat of it. Starting near Walhalla, you’ll drop through layers of shale and limestone that tell 450 million years of story, hitting the notorious Devil’s Elbow switchback that’s claimed more than a few oil pans. The Pembina River crossing at mile 3.2 runs knee-deep most of spring, and the ascent back up the east face requires momentum and prayer in equal measure.
This is solid intermediate territory demanding high clearance and low-range capability. Wet conditions turn the shale into greased glass, so stick to late summer through early fall. No permits needed, but fuel up in Cavalier—it’s 40 miles to the next station. What you get is the most dramatic topography in North Dakota, ancient fossils in the cut banks, and bragging rights for conquering the state’s most technical natural obstacle.
