This technical ridge trail cuts through the remote backcountry of Theodore Roosevelt National Park’s South Unit, where bison trails intersect with weathered sandstone ledges and crumbling shale slopes. The route follows an old ranching road that climbs through prairie dog towns and navigates sharp-edged coulees, with the most challenging section being the descent into Peaceful Valley where loose rock and narrow clearances test both vehicle and driver.
Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance 4WD with decent ground clearance for rock protection. Summer brings rattlesnakes and extreme heat, making spring and fall the prime seasons.
