Togwotee Pass to Brooks Lake Historic Freight Road
Historic freight route to Teton wilderness
This forgotten freight route once hauled supplies to remote Brooks Lake Lodge in the early 1900s, and today offers one of Wyoming’s premier high-altitude overlanding experiences. Starting from Togwotee Pass at 9,658 feet, the route follows original wagon ruts through alpine meadows and dense lodgepole forests, with Pinnacle Buttes dominating the northern horizon. The technical challenge comes at Angle Mountain Creek crossing where spring runoff creates a proper water obstacle requiring careful line choice and momentum.
Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD and recovery gear for creek crossings—stock vehicles handle it fine with driver skill. Best season runs July through October when snow clears the high country, though early season means muddy conditions and high water. Excellent dispersed camping at Brooks Lake with pit toilets and fire rings. What you get: Teton Range views, historic freight road experience, and some of Wyoming’s finest alpine country without the Yellowstone crowds.
