Windhoek to Fish River Canyon via Keetmanshoop

Namibian overland classic to Africa's grand canyon

Easy

The C12 and C10 gravel roads from Windhoek to Fish River Canyon cut through the heart of southern Namibia’s vast Karoo plateau, past iconic Quiver Tree forests near Keetmanshoop and endless horizons that’ll humble any driver. This 550-kilometer route follows colonial-era wagon tracks and German settlement roads, crossing moonscape terrain where the only obstacles are wandering oryx and the occasional farm gate. The highlight comes at Hobas viewpoint, where the Fish River has carved a 160-kilometer scar through billion-year-old rock.

Easy to moderate difficulty depending on recent rains — the gravel can turn treacherous when wet. Any high-clearance vehicle handles this route fine, but bring spare tires for the sharp Karoo stones. Fuel up in Windhoek and Keetmanshoop; carry 40+ liters of water and camping gear if hitting the trail camps at Canyon Village. April to September offers the best weather. This is classic Namibian overlanding — big skies, bigger distances, and landscapes that redefine your sense of scale.
